As the cost of things like housing and food continues to increase, more than half the families in Waukegan Township — and approximately 25% of those in Lake County — are not earning enough to afford the basic necessities of life.

Lake County families living below the poverty level, or earning less than the ALICE standard, can take advantage of a variety of opportunities for both parents and children to ensure a more comfortable lifestyle for them now and in the future. Of the 16 largest townships in the state with a population of 100,000 or more, Waukegan ranks 16th with 57% of its families beneath the ALICE threshold, according to United Way data. No other townships in the state have more than 100,000 people.

“Workforce development plays a crucial role in helping families in poverty and the unemployed by providing them with the necessary skills, resources and support to secure stable and well-paying careers,” Harris said in the email. “If you don’t have a high school diploma, your chances of earning a good wage are very limited,” he said.
