Some state lawmakers have taken action recently to make it easier for homeowners and authorities to deal with squatters.

While it’s tough to really pin down the scope of the squatting problem, there’s no doubt it can turn into a nightmare for a property owner.“Unfortunately, bad actors have figured out ways to take advantage of this, exploit really the process that goes through the local government,” Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a recent Fox News interview. “So, legislation ... to stiffen the penalties to go after these folks, to also speed up the eviction process.

Both Newsweek and the Journal editorial board cited a survey conducted by the National Rental Home Council that showed Atlanta, Dallas and Orange County, Florida, as squatter hot spots.
