Lawmakers are proposing new legislation to improve security around substations and increase penalties for damaging equipment after recent attacks knocked out power to thousands and underscored the vulnerability of the nation’s far-flung electrical grid.

days after the North Carolina shootings — are asking lawmakers to increase penalties for intentionally destroying electrical infrastructure or other utility property.would set a sliding scale based on how much damage is done — if it costs more than $25,000 to fix equipment and cover losses, the perpetrator could face up to 20 years in prison, double the current 10-year maximum.

Dominion Energy South Carolina President Keller Kissam said the state saw at least 12 incidents of people intentionally damaging equipment last year. Some state senators worried that the law could be used against hunters who accidentally damage utility equipment. Kissam agreed but said sometimes that damage isn’t an accident, as hunters use equipment to set their gun sights or as target practice. A subcommittee plans to review the bill further in a few weeks.

“Specifically, ensuring monies for perimeter security, cameras and alarms,” said Harrell, who now oversees security for an energy company that services multiple states.

I think most people know who the culprits are. If they were Conservatives they would have been caught, prosecuted and in prison by now.

This will turn out to be harder for these Republican legislators b/c it's their voters doing this stuff & they know it on some level. The sheriff in the first NC case was very cagey the times I saw him on TV & wouldn't be surprised if he knew who did it.

Electric chair sounds fitting...

And people think increasing penalties will change the minds of committed domestic terrorists?

Seems we're having to fortify against attack our schools, our churches, our public venues, our shopping malls, and now our infrastructure, effectively turning America into a police state. Maybe it's time to be proactive, and stop letting firearms get into the wrong hands.

Good it’s about time to put away these low life folks and their circles. Endangering folks who rely on electricity for health reason.

Good, tired of these Globalist anti Americans coming across our boarder. Killing our kids with fentanyl, and trying to shoot out our electric grid. Secure them better!

Take the time and money to protect from electromagnetic waves while you’re at it, too.

Duh

Isn't it in the power companies' best interest to invest THEIR money in securing these locations?

Glad to hear it.

Perhaps the cost for some of that security should come out of the power company profits? Investing in the thing that makes them money.

Finally, my God it took this long !!

Finally, a Republican is working. Of course, it has to take a sad event to take action. It’s a start!

I don’t understand why these places weren’t secured as though Potus lives there? Why are you lot always reactive & not proactive? This is wild to me. Really USA?

In lieu of protection by making them more secure. This place is a joke

Left wing domestic terrorism is on the rise
