The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services sent out its last COVID-19 data summary on Wednesday. The department will continue sending its combined COVID-and-flu updates on Fridays.

Alaska Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anne Zink discusses the state of the coronavirus pandemic during a news conference at the Atwood Building in Anchorage on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2021.

“But we try to put that into a larger context,” she said. “We also talk about how many people show up to the emergency department for COVID-like illness, how many people are showing up to the emergency department for influenza-like illness, and how full the hospitals are in general.” Zink said there are important differences between COVID and the flu to keep in mind when it comes to risk level. Older Alaskans are still at the highest risk for severe illness and death due to COVID, while flu carries increased risk for both the very young and the very old.
