In the early 1950s, Stanley Cohen met Rita Levi-Montalcini at Washington University in St. Louis. The son of Jewish immigrants from Russia, he was a young researcher in biochemistry. Thirteen years older, she was a Jewish neurologist who emigrated to the U.S. from Italy after World War II.
Their skills were complementary. Their joint research led to the discovery of growth factors, or agents that stimulate cell growth and differentiation. Those findings underpinned later research that enhanced knowledge of cancer, dementia...
