St. Francis of Assisi students blanket organ donors with love

project in which the students tied together blankets to provide organ donors with comfort while in the hospital.

“The program is getting back on track,” said Lifebanc’s Senior Director of External Relations Heather Mekesa. “We had to pause many projects like this over the last few years due to COVID and limited volunteer opportunities. “It is also a great opportunity to bring the community together for a mission that helps save and heal lives,” she said.“I invited my homeroom parents to prepare the blankets by cutting them for the students,” Zullo said. “After the fleece material was cut and prepared, the students tied the two blankets together by tying approximately 35 knots per side.“When working in the classrooms, the students each took a side and worked together to complete a blanket.

“Of course, when I asked my class if they wanted to make the comfort blankets for Lifebanc, they were on board straight away. They recognized that to give up an organ for another person is a true act of love -- giving someone a better quality of life or even extending someone’s life.
