ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Winter is hanging on by a thread — at least the astronomical season is.
A ridge of high pressure to our south will greatly influence the weather across the Gulf Coast region this week. From Southcentral to Southeast Alaska, mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies will be evident each day. Highs will steadily warm across Southcentral, with the low- to mid-40s expected by the end of the week. For many locations, this will lead to temperatures about 8 to 12 degrees above average.
All in all, the rest of this week favors warmer, sunnier, and drier conditions for the Gulf Coast region, so get outside and soak up the early spring sunshine. The low — which is still near the Aluetians — will move northwestward through the Bering Sea. This track will significantly lower snowfall totals, compared to what was expected yesterday. While much of the snow looks to fall over Russia, coastal regions of Western Alaska can still expect to see 2 to 6 inches of accumulation. It’s likely we could see some higher amounts through the Southern Seward Peninsula and Nulato Valley.
