“[The department] has funded efforts in five main areas,” said spokeswoman Shannon Powers. “Survey programs for detection and monitoring of the insect, implementing control methods and quarantine measures to slow the spread, research for better understanding of the pest and public outreach to raise awareness.”
With no help from the city, Ms. Masta and friends reached out to Penn State Extension, which advised them to use circle traps, which can be bought or homemade. They use netting wrapped around a tree to force lanternfly nymphs to crawl upward into a funnel then into a plastic bag, where they die. “We tried every holistic way we could think of. Straight vinegar through a hose sprayer, then Dawn soap, which we very quickly found didn’t work,” she said. “We tried a Pine-Sol mixture in pans, the next step was Neem oil. None of them worked.”
But when landscaped lawns start to look like lanternfly latrines, it’s tempting to try home remedies no matter how bizarre. A Brighton Heights homeowner tried smoking them out. “We don’t love that method to begin with,” said Mr. Stavish. “But cut before the nymphs emerge and you might get the wrong tree. And it’s not going to kill the lanternflies. They’ll just go to another tree, which is the last thing we want.”
