Spotify CEO Daniel Ek says 'canceling voices is a slippery slope' as Joe Rogan backlash mounts.

In the wake of the ever-evolving saga and immense social media backlash against Rogan, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek apologized to staffers in a memo Sunday obtained by ABC News. Ek said Rogan chose to remove several episodes from Spotify, but made clear that:"I do not believe that silencing Joe is the answer."Joe Rogan speaks at the weigh in before a UFC on FOX 5 event in Seattle, Dec. 7, 2012.

"While I strongly condemn what Joe has said and I agree with his decision to remove past episodes from our platform, I realize some will want more," Ek added."And I want to make one point very clear -- I do not believe that silencing Joe is the answer. We should have clear lines around content and take action when they are crossed, but canceling voices is a slippery slope."

The chief executive also said the company is committing to an"incremental investment of $100 million" for the licensing, development and marketing of music and audio content from historically marginalized groups. "Now I know that to most people, there's no context where a white person is ever allowed to say that word, never mind publicly on a podcast, and I agree with that," Rogan said. He added that he hasn't used the racial slur"in years" and"never used it to be racist," though he acknowledged that"I clearly have f----- up."

No it is not, but giving racists a platform and $100 million is.

Thats the guy who want to buy Arsenal fc

Giving rogan a platform to spew racism and fatal misinformation is not a slippery slope. Allowing him to stay on with his flimsy apology is your slippery slope.

'First it's not profiteering off of racism and anti-vaccine misinformation, next thing we'll have to pay artists fairly'

What a lame excuse for promoting hate, sexism and outright lies for the sole purpose of profit. It is as simple as that Daniel Ek.

They listened to his slime and decided to pay him $100 million. At the same time they told their female and brown middle class employees making .1% of that how committed they are to equity. Disgusting.

That's the typical response of the coward - or in this case, a CEO too gutless to do the right thing, for fear of losing revenue. Afterall, 'evil triumphs when good men do nothing'. Pathetic..MSNBC BBCWorld

Or people can state their voice with their money. If they don't like a platform that gives a person a voice and enables it, they have every right to stop paying for the platform. Either way, but sides need to quiet down with their extreme bs.

Spotify is a digital music service that gives you access to millions of songs.' And then Spotify decided to use this successful platform to become political. Not a very wise business decision. People invest/subscribe in Spotify for the music, not political views.

Nobody is canceling Joe Rogan. Joe Rogan's mouth turned people off. We live in a free society. If we choose not to listen to Joe, that's not cancelling, that's making an informed choice. Misinformationiskillingus

istandwithjoerogan

If YOU censor somebody's voice, does it prove YOU are right and THEY are wrong ... or suggest ... THEY are asking questions YOU can't answer or making statements YOU can't refute?

Canceled subscriptions is also a slippery slope for any business

Well hang on buddy. I’m really confused on Spotify’s position. They embolden him, now deal with it. Take the hit and hold your principles - stop acting like the choice is that hard when they’ve sacrificed one for the other already

We cancel with our $$. Subscription canceled. ✅

… for his profit …. Does he let pedophiles podcast about harming children? No? Then this isn’t about silencing people, it’s about money

Spotify in 2018 after removing R. Kelly music vs Spotify in 2022 allowing Joe Rogan to remain

Yeah, I wonder if we did censor Hitler at the time… perhaps millions of people wouldn’t have died!

A slippery slope is when the CEO doesn’t act in the best interest of its shareholders.

Spotify is not a public broadcaster it makes its own choice about who and what to air. It endorses Rogan’s views with $100m in his bank account. Consumers have made their own determination about that arrangement

Rogan espoused misinformation which killed people and made people sick, PLUS, espoused racism. Yet, he gets to keep the $100 million. Tiger Woods, Barry Bonds, sponsors disappeared for much less. White Privilege is real.

If anything, this entire thing is driving people towards Rogan just like the media's last attempt to silence him.

Another false argument that’s dishonest about free speech and free markets. You’re free to platform hate speech spotify, and consumers are free to take their business elsewhere.

Slippery slope if you axe him .agreed

don’t cancel him but make the listener sign a pledge every time that they understand they are listening to lies, deceit and misinformation just like you have to pledge you’re 18 to get to certain other sites. Big warning label on each episode “warning: contains misinformation”

Now might be a good time to remind Spotify employees that despite their many promises, they listed to Joe Rogan’s podcasts and decided his brand of slime is worth $100 Million, roughly half a million per episode. How much are they paying you?

And the $100 million investment doesn’t have anything to do with it right Spotify? Why not have Nazis on? You don’t want to restrict them right? Good to know that racism, misogyny, and homphobia are not deal-breakers for you. Next.

Freedom of speech matters. Right to bear arms matters. A woman's right to choose matters. When America begins canceling these freedoms and rights, we are close to repeating Nazi Germany.

People will always speak out against racism Daniel. Opposing hate is not a slippery slope!

Just doing what Kushner tells him to do. A slippery slope.

Good for him!

Twitter cancelled tfg and all is good.

No CRT in learning institutes, but open season for any disparaging epithet a person can imagine on social media. Keep them ethnically dumb in the classroom, and media influenced racist socially. Caucasions! always wanting it both ways.

Anything a Spotify CEO has to say, should be said in music clips JoeRogan JoeRoganExperience

Especially profitable ones... he's already admitted that he won't cancel a profitable pod cast

You are speeding down a slippery slope now.

Ok, mass psychosis is a thing. Feel, that? That is hopelessness.

$100 million reasons!!

We will just continue cancelling our subscriptions. No biggie.

FireWhoopi her recipe for Jewish American Princess Fried Chicken was yet another antisemitic slur. Hold her accountable and yourselves.

There is no backlash

Didn’t they “cancel” over 100 of Rogans voices?

If you turn off Facebook you also turn off Spotify and Facebook kicks people off for speaking their minds like saying Trump is a dork. Got me kicked off for thirty days . Small violins Spotify

I can only assume it doesn’t bother the CEO because he 1. Puts money above all. Or 2. Feels very comfortable with it. Either way FOSpotify

Lol .. all about the 💵

This would make more sense if Spotify didn't spend $100m dollars to promote Rogan
