has bowed in the face of pressure from critics about supporting the spread of COVID and vaccine misinformation with a plan to add warning labels on its global platform to content that skirts the line between “what is acceptable and what is not,” as CEO Daniel Ek stated Sunday.
Earlier in the year, a number of public health officials urged Spotify to take action against Rogan, accusing the massively popular “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast of possessing a “concerning history of broadcasting misinformation, particularly regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.” Rogan’s program is currently the most-listened to podcast on the audio streaming service. Rogan signed a $100 million deal in May 2020, giving Spotify exclusive distribution rights his podcast.
There has been a mounting wave of speculation that Young and Mitchell’s exit from Spotify may potentially spawn a larger exodus from the platform by musicians and content creators.“A decade ago, we created Spotify to enable the work of creators around the world to be heard and enjoyed by listeners around the world. To our very core, we believe that listening is everything. Pick almost any issue and you will find people and opinions on either side of it.
“Today we are publishing our long-standing Platform Rules. These policies were developed by our internal team in concert with a number of outside experts and are updated regularly to reflect the changing safety landscape. These are rules of the road to guide all of our creators—from those we work with exclusively to those whose work is shared across multiple platforms. You can now find them on our newsroom, and they’ll live permanently on the main Spotify website.
Rarely can artists be separated from their politics and their works. What makes it difficult is our paying for their past creative talent; thus, empowering their wealth & celebrity in denigrating our own values and beliefs. We have paid dearly.
Adults can decide. Neil and Joni officially establishment elitists for censorship. (Or just temper tantrum old Laurel Canyon folk, attention hungry, no longer relevant, no longer hip so join in the clique of Hollywood, big pharma, monopolists, and swamp?)
Putting the same warning on every item that talks about covid makes the warning useless. This is by design. They like disinformation, they're paying $100,000,000 for it!
Spotify has placed a bandage on top of a wound that needs a tourniquet. Can you stop acting like they or Joe Rogan have done a damn thing to promise the end of covid misinformation? Daniel Ek and Spotify are paying Joe Rogan $100M to spew both racist and dangerous propaganda.
I figured there'd be an exodus back when Daniel Ek and Spotify invested $113 million in Helsing AI.
Big whoop.
Too little too late Spotify! Joe’s been at this a long time. People died taking Ivermectin from off label advice!
produces misinformation on Spotify.
It’s lies. DeleteSpotify
It'a a step. A PR step -- and not necessarily in the right direction, Spotify. I'm disgusted as a $SPOT shareholder. And, I would no longer be a shareholder if your lack of leadership didn't result in a significant equity loss in your (and my) stock value, DanielEk! Spotify
Sharing a diversity of ideas is good, when they're in good faith, and not actively harmful mis-or-disinformation. Even if the person repeating harmful misinformation is doing so with good intentions and fully believes what they're saying, it's still harmful misinformation.
He’s buckling. Not long now.
Paying artists $0.003 per stream is money you can walk away from Spotify
It’s not misinformation it’s called lies.
He made his choice and now has to live with the consequences.
