There's a lot of happy campers over the fact 'West Side Story' flopped in theaters.

Long story short ... the guy was accused of sexually assaulting a woman -- who told her story on Twitter, and then deleted it -- who claims she was 17 when she had sex with him in 2014. She alleges she felt violated afterward, and went on to say she suffers from PTSD. Ansel denied her characterization in a since-deleted message -- insisting it was consensual.

Other women have come forward with claims against him as well, alleging he was predatory and soliciting minors before he was uber famous -- but he hasn't addressed those specifically. In any case, him being tapped as the lead for Spielberg was widely criticized. In SS's defense, the allegation surfaced last year -- well after Ansel had been cast and even after the film had wrapped ... so it was too late to even consider getting someone else. Interestingly, Spielberg and co. haven't addressed the situation thus far ... and all signs point to them staying mum.

The fascinating part ... 'West Side Story' may actually have a shot at getting some awards soon, so the saga isn't quite over yet.

Remakes of great movies shouldn't be done it's that simple

Should've streamed it for us older folks who are familiar with this infamous body of work. They won't get their $$$ back

Should've streamed it for us older folks who are familiar with this infamous body of work.

Only Liberals would be happy for failure

Well, maybe it needed this kind of energy

It tanked because, we want to see some known names, I really have no desire to wear a mask and watch a re-make for $20 a person, and it seemed like a weird attempt to make something that was pure magic the first time. I think it was an overreach.

No interest to see this and does not look good. Not a surprise it is flopping.

Flopped? Docs on that?

Two reasons why this flopped and I’m happy it flopped! 1. You shouldn’t have touch the original! 2.Yes cause Ansel in it!

What’s Next? The Godfather? Make Private Ryan a Person of Color? Make Tootsie an Athlete?

Hamilton was a one time shot of luck. The rest has been overkill of shit remakes & even worse musical times. Clearly people will go for something new..ONCE. But, they messed with a classic. You don’t EVER redo initial greatness.

If it ain't broke, why fix it?

Do people these days bring to life new shows. Enough remakes. We need

Who wants to watch a musical. Just not getting the right vibes for romance , musicals

It’s 2021, no one cares about musicals!

Have you seen these new products? Everything you are looking for from a to z is on amazon. Come on, what are you waiting for?

The Shawshank redemption flopped too.

This musical is literally only loved by actors and not the public…most musicals actually

Not one person in the comments mentions your weird made up theory about some sexual allegations about a actor nobody cares about. Stop doing this thing where you reference fake outrage.

Partly is probably about the casting but also that people are probably tired of musical genre these days, same thing happened to In the heights and Cats.

Why can’t Hollywood come up with original stories? This remake crap is just a cheap way of trying to get people to the theatres!!!

One too many remakes.

op-ed: go with east side.

It has nothing to do with him. It's the fact that no one asked for a remake of This story. Was not needed.

I had no interest in seeing the remake, I love the original.

They need to stop remaking movies and come up with new story lines

I called it before production started, the original was a masterpiece what was Spielberg thinking... this was like a Disney/Nickelodeon version

johncampea this is interesting!

I can't speak for anyone else but I'm never too excited about these remakes that are seldom as good as the originals. It always feels like no one has an original thought and are simply hoping to cash in on the success of someone else who was brilliant before them.

I actually like remakes and reboots and sequels but some movies just don't need it and I think this is one of them

It was a great movie for the ppl that know the original & young ppl that like musicals. Todays times R rated, sex, cursing and blood make the best movies. Different generation. Too bad.

Not his fault. It's just a horrible movie.

Saw it today, it was incredible and true to the original. ❤️

In 2021 no one wants to see dancing gang members

The movie was fantastic!

Did people forget the movie 'Cats'? It wasn't Ansel, it's just people never watched the original Movie or probably they never saw the play just like 'Cats'.

Marvel fans watch marvel movie 3-6 times musical people should need to support there movies

Go Woke go Broke Steven !

The casting was horrible. I wish they wouldn’t remake classics. We like classic movies add some cut off scenes and remaster the originals. Our dorm was given free tickets most people didn’t even bother. A few of us went and walked out (in a storm ☔️) after less than an hour.

No one wants to see a west side story remake! That’s WHY it flopped

I blame no one wants to watch the west side story lol.

Not many people wanted a remake of the original. Hollywood just doesn’t listen.

Who is the audience for a movie like this? Older people are afraid to go to movies because of covid and younger people aren't interested in musicals.

It flopped in the movie theater because no one goes to the movie theater anymore. Throw that ish on Netflix and be done with it.

Lol a lot of stories about The guy who runs TMZ also. The movie flopped because it didn’t excite anyone to see another remake.

Sometimes being deaf to the audience you’re trying to win over doesn’t pay off. It’s silly to ignore these types of requests.

I don't care how good it may have been - the original was such an amazing work of art that it should not have been remade. It's like when Tim Burton - a favorite of mine - remade Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I saw it yesterday and this was the movie theater:

There was already that pile In the Heights ..there was no need to make another musical turd..as for Ansel, he had sex with that 17y.o girl an he was about 20ish, now other women are crawling out saying he's a predator..well I hope this gets taken care of.

It did? Okay. It didn't need a remake anyway, since not only is the original a classic but it's already a remake of Romeo and Juliet which was a remake of a narrative poem that was probably a remake of something that came before it

I wish people in entertainment would get the message, which is,'We don't care!!!'

How did it flop. It's barely out

I think the film is just a hard sell because it’s a musical

Spielberg is a washed up has been

I’ve always loved the original, but have also always cringed at myself for needing to overlook the very white Natalie Wood playing a Puerto Rican to love it.

Why do they do remakes of films? unless you can improve upon them… don’t remake them! The original film was historic! There’s some things you just shouldn’t remake. He has touched E.T.! Why is that? 😳

Its a panny - no one going to dirty ass theatres

1.) It is tough to get people to go to the theater which is why most Blockbusters pushed back release date to next Summer. 2.) This film has narrow appeal. It's a musical. Lots of young stars but the content appeals only to older people. 3.) It will be on HBO Max in a few weeks.

Maybe it just stinks.

Stop remaking classics in the heights flopped too

We don’t need your input we can be the judge for ourselves. As if you are to be trusted —- maybe you are against him like you are BRITNEY- I take FoxNews has you on It’s leash

Ahahahahaha of course it did.

No interest in seeing a musical

It just seemed unnecessary to remake a classic. It was as dumb as when they tried to remake 'Psycho' If ain't broken, don't try to fix it.

I had to delete him on Instagram a couple of years ago I found him too egotistical too odd…

This one should never have been touched...

It's going to win awards. Not sure if that helps at the box office
