SpiderManNoWayHome co-writer Chris McKenna says that the movie 'should be a satisfying story unto itself,' even if Tom Holland's Peter Parker doesn't return to the MCU. WARNING! Spoilers ahead:

Co-writer Chris McKenna doesn’t mind if the story of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker ends with Spider-Man: No Way Home. With a little help from Tony Stark , Holland made his MCU debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. He then went on to sling webs in five films, including Jon Watts’ Spider-Man"Homecoming" trilogy.

Instead of making the world forget Peter Parker is Spider-Man, Strange’s spell brings villains from the franchise’s past into the MCU. These characters, who supposedly all know that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, include Doc Ock , Green Goblin , Electro , Sandman , Lizard , and a pair of familiar faces who know a thing or two about great power and great responsibility. In more ways than one, Spider-Man: No Way Home wraps up both Spider-Man’s story in the MCU and on the silver screen... for now.

“This should be a satisfying story unto itself. If it ends here, great ... If you look backward and go, 'This was an origin story that took place over three stories to get this Peter Parker to this place where he’s stripped-down, anonymous, has no billionaire benefactor, has been through the sacrifice of what it really means to have this power and what that responsibility that goes along with that is, and is now having to look for how to pay rent' ...

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, the only way to stop Strange’s spell from unleashing multiversal chaos is to make everyone in the MCU forget Peter Parker. Peter realizes this and asks Strange to cast it anyway, which is the hero’s way of accepting his"great responsibility." Before the spell takes root, however, he says goodbye to his friends, MJ and Ned , promising them he’ll find them afterward.

Spider-Man No Way Home’s ending could facilitate a divorce between Marvel/Disney and Sony should negotiations break down again in the future. However, Sony producer Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige have confirmed they actively developing a story for Spider-Man 4. Sony’s Spider-Man is committed to at least one more MCU appearance and, while Pascal said she wants Holland to star in another Spider-Man trilogy, the actor is under no obligation to put the mask back on.
