SpiderManNoWayHome now ranks as the 10th-highest grossing domestic release in history, supplanting Disney’s “Incredibles 2” ($608 million)

The comic book sequel, starring Tom Holland as Marvel’s favorite neighborhood web-slinger, towered over domestic box office charts for the third weekend in a row. “No Way Home” captured $52.7 million over the New Year’s holiday frame, boosting its domestic tally to $609 million. It extends an epic streak for the latest Spidey adventure as the lone blockbuster to deliver the kind of ticket sales it would have been expected to make in pre-pandemic times.

Globally, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has grossed $1.37 billion, passing 2018’s “Black Panther” to become the 12th biggest film in history. International ticket sales have accounted for a bulk of that haul, with overseas revenues at $759 million. At No. 4, Lionsgate’s crowd-pleasing sports drama “American Underdog” earned $4.07 million from 2,813 venues, pushing its North American tally to $14.9 million. The inspirational film about Kurt Warner’s unlikely rise to become a two-time NFL champion has been embraced by audiences , with an “A+” CinemaScore. Unfortunately, high marks from moviegoers isn’t translating into the kind of word-of-mouth needed to sell tickets.

Other notable releases in the top 10 include Disney’s “West Side Story,” which pocketed $2.1 million from 2,690 venues. In total, director Steven Spielberg’s remake of the classic musical has made only $29.6 million in North America and $47 million worldwide, a disastrous result considering the acclaimed movie cost $100 million to produce.

Well it isn’t a flop it’s a pandemic. I’d rent it right now online if I could. I want to see it but it isn’t safe to go to theaters right now.

We saw WestSideStory last night (UK) and loved it, will go and watch it again. Who cares about the money 💰 (obvs not me) when you get captivated by the cast, cinematography 💕 story and music 🎵 🎼 and the appearance of Rita Moreno 😍👏💕 true legend 👏👏💓💕

should've hired his non-union Mexican equivalent WestSideStory

Serves him right for being too cowardly to update it to a contemporary setting for fear of it being too 'political'.

I mean, some things in cinema history you don’t touch. They will be doing a remake of Jaws next. Wait a minute ...🤔

There is reason no one is remaking such films as 'Gone with the Wind', 'The Sound of Music' (apart from politics), 'The Wizard of Oz' and hundreds others. These are unbeatable classics and will always remain so. Spielberg 'got away' with remake, but wanted money too? A joke.

The original is a masterpiece, so (great director as he is) I don't really know what he thought he could bring to it?

The guy directs ,produces or presents the best movies you've ever seen in your life consistently for 40 years ,makes one flop and Variety is right there , ready and waiting to twist the knife in a little deeper .

killguerro RikCresp avis sur le fait que cette merde ait été un désastre au box office? Perso jen suis ravi😎

because it's an out-dated story

Should've not release it around the same time No Way Home was released since NWH was one of the most anticipated movie worldwide

where'd all the money go?

2 words. Ansel Elgort. 🙄

Pandemic

When you Try and redo an already perfect movie this is what you get.

This is what happens when u don't choose your leads wisely and properly. Ansel Elgort!?!!! Really? How did someone like Steven Spielberg took this horrible decision to make a movie with Ansel with such a huge budget? This box office was obviously expected. nd the female lead?🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s almost like the original was fine and there was no need to remake it

Masterpiece.

It’s a semi-obscure property with no major billable stars and the biggest name in the film never recovered from misconduct allegations a few years ago. This isn’t a surprise.

America has garbage taste in most everything.

I regret I haven't seen this in cinema, too quick to disappear before I had the chance to watch it :(

It’s an amazing movie. The poor gross had very little to do with Ansel, probably a lot more to do with COVID, and nothing to do with it being “too political” or bc “musicals shouldn’t be made into movies”

we never wanted it

Put it out on streaming platforms for the millions of us who aren’t willing to risk our lives for the director’s artistic vision.

La cultura gringa ya aburre

Pobrecico...

1. Pandemic 2. Ansel Elgort 🤢

its almost like there's a pandemic going on right now

A la gente que nos gusta el cine nos toca los cojones así de claro ahora digo el que no la vea en pantalla grande se pierde una de las cosas que merece la pena ver y mucho

When you consider the audience for this movie and add the pandemic into the calculus, the reason WestSideStory isn't making its money back becomes clear quickly

Eso les pasa por no elegir a Tini Tini Tini como protagonista , si no lo hubiera triunfado con solo ver qué Tini siempre es éxito

Art is only good if it makes money. See that photo: that’s art baby!

oh the way the mcu completely killed cinema...

Es una pena si tenéis la oportunidad ir a verla

Classics should never be remade, Case in point this.

Btw Omicron, streaming destroying consumer habits and a questionable trailer it all comes as no surprise

what makes production costs up to 100 million, other than to pay for spielberg?

Give it time.

Well only WSS?.. except for Spider Man l can say it was a desaster for the industry 🥴

Makes absolutely no sense to me other than the fact Mr Rona is still walking around. The film is perfection. Best musical film to be released in years. Loved every second of this art. However like In The Heights it got the littlest amount of promo in the UK. Hope it gets awards

the film is as great as the original and i pity those that missed out on it

I love the show West Side Story and I'm really, really looking forward to seeing this movie - as soon as it is safe to do so.

I wonder how much Jaws made or Jurassic Park or Indiana Jones or ET or Saving Private Ryan or Hook or Empire of the Sun or Lincoln or Amistad or Schindlers list or... (continues over the page). 🤫

Normal, a quién coño le gusta un musical? A cuatro gatos...

There is a pandemic, you know… Adult people are scared.

Money doesn’t really signify quality, but it is a shame because the film is really good.

Yeah let me just go on out to the theater to catch what I can see at home in a couple months, nothing of concern going on out there

Pandemic.

i knew it from the day i heard about a remake. It was not going to work, This is a classic. Hollywood should not mess with classics, whats next Godfather?...Gone with the win...The sound of music... Lawrence of arabia...?

if dawson leery were real it woulda made 200 mil.

Start streaming it!

This is so terrible…Are the cost of these movies that don’t do well at the box office ever covered once they go streaming..

That’s what happens when you don’t have much star power. I think Spielberg relied on just his name to hope it made over $200m to break even

westsidestory was the best movie I saw all year. I’m going to see it again. I hope more people go out to see it.

It'll find its audience in time....because it's great.

Just saw it today. It's so good.

Movies that big need to include preview streaming as part of their Box Office. I know a lot of people who would have paid the $19–$24 charge to watch it at home over the holidays. I'm sure it will recoup in time.

I’d love to see it in a theater, but it’s a little Covidy out there. Might’ve been smart to release it to stream for a few bucks over the holidays.

The movie truly is magnificent and such a shame its doing poorly at the box office. They truly don't make movies like this anymore..

Went woke, pushed a political agenda… people wanna go to movies for good times not to be lectured too or brow beat about inclusiveness and diversity with those being the main lede instead of telling how cool the story is.

No one really wants to see that ngl

Wait until it starts streaming. This new adaptation of the classic is phenomenal and absolutely breathtaking. I was in tears after every show-stopping number! A total tour de force!!!

Also Variety... Money is more important than art.

Sad because it’s fantastic

Went to 1 movie, person next to me took off their mask the entire time…I’m laying off theaters for a while. I will stream it the first day it’s available. WestSideStory

It's a fucking pandemic. Why are we measuring things based on the before-times metric?

100 million and all they’re doing is dancing like what

Community and high school theaters across the country can do this with like $50 and some leftover paint, wtf?

The joy and love of movies just bleeds off of the screen from this thing. Steven Spielberg has been making magic for decades and continues here with this one. This is so painful. It’s just another reminder of how dumbed down we’ve gotten. It must’ve needed more capes and tights.

who ever could have foreseen this

Isn't this true of everything except super hero movies or the Matrix right now? I REALLY want to see WSS, been looking forward to it for ages, but I'm not going on a movie theater. I want to see it on the big screen, but I'll watch it on demand.

The dumbing down of America continues

Releasing a Film during a Pandemic isn’t a good idea!!!!!?

the ansel elgort effect. feel sad for everyone in this movie except him and the casting director

If our only measure of 'good' creativity is 'Did it make enough money?', then we have failed as a society.

It’s truly a terrific film. One of Spielberg’s best. Certain works of art shouldn’t be deemed failures because they didn’t make money.

This bullshit assumption that a movie has to make a billion to be labelled a great movie needs to end. Go tell that to fans of the shawshank redemption, Bladerunner or The Thing. Flops all of em. Masterpieces all of em.

Such a shame, it is a powerhouse!

This movie is still a masterpiece. Idc what anyone says. I enjoyed every second of it❤️

That is a shame.

I don't like Spielberg, but you could be a little more objective with your headlines.

One of two things Spielberg could've done differently. Set West Side Story in contemporary times, or made this movie for a while lot less. La La Land was a $30 mil budget and grossed over $150 mil. A musical is not a reason to flop. So many reasons why this movie lost money.

It’s a platonic going on!!

Amazing movie.

I thought it was fantastic, ArianaDeBose blew it up. But those who follow Broadway know her star power.

The movie was great I enjoyed it. Its definitely worth the watch ..

But he will never nag about it or put the blame on any corporation.

the 1950s period setting shiuld have been replaced for a current setting to make it more relevant to young viewers. Still, who wants to go see a $17 movie with outdated music? Maybe if the music had been modernized, with some hip hop. That is why Hamilton is a hit.

Bad marketing Star has sa accusations Not a big demand for it Pandemic Spiderman

I saw the movie on the first day of the year. I was the only one in the theater. I enjoyed the movie though!

But Disney could have helped West Side Story by opening it December 22 (same day as Fox opened The Greatest Showman) as was originally dated, as would have been an alternative for audiences over Christmas and has held strongly over last two weeks and was up 84% in the UK last w/e

While industry sings 'everything is awesome' after Spider-Man performs like an Avengers film West Side Story highlights the massive issues the industry has failed to deal with over the last 20+ months

Either you’re a classic movie fan who loved the original and didn’t see the need for a reboot, or you’ve never heard of West Side Story and went to see Spider-Man.

But it exists, so where's the error?

I’m sure it’s lovely, but no one asked for this reboot, and it certainly isn’t a draw to the theater during a pandemic 🤷🏻‍♂️

That cost $100M? Wow

It sucks to see it do badly at the box office, but at least they can say they made a hell of a great film. Nothing can take that away from them.

There was no need to remake this classic film. Do worry Spielberg will probably win the best director Oscar; Hollywood is not going let him be embarrassed with a box office flop AND no awards.

Another pointless, cynical remake from a director dangling it for Oscar bait.

1. Pandemic and theater-only. Not as many people are willing to risk their health and lives for watching a film. 2. Only in theaters a week before the next big film came along - and which pushed it out of IMAX screens. 3. Holidays - people want to interact with friends & family.

I can’t wait to see this but the way they’re packing people shoulder to shoulder in theaters during a pandemic isn’t the move.

Many directors toward the end of their careers make flops. Maybe it's time to hang up the baseball cap.

So sad, the movie it’s a masterpiece

Could this be the result of Hollywood making a movie nobody was asking for? Or at least, the result of nobody being able to tell Steven Spielberg NO?

I would have watched it, but no theater nearby showed it.

I haven’t seen it yet, but then the original is a masterpiece and I think some films should not be remade. I can’t be alone in that apparently.

No doubt because literally nobody wants to sit through a musical.

PattiLuPone said it best! Musicals aren’t meant to be put to film. (Not exact words lmao but it was something to that effect) SHES RIGHT! Leave the medium alone it belongs in the theater!

Yeah but it was damned good

I saw it and it was wonderful. Can't wait to see it again (and I rarely watch movies over and over). Exciting to discover lots of great new talent. It will do well over the years and become a new classic.

Guess the appetite for going to the movies in the midst of a global pandemic may be the reason?

I will personally rent it every 48 hours until it gets its money back.

I loved it and the cinema was full when we went. My daughter loved it too. The whole production was fantastic and I would recommend it to all except young children. It’s a modernised script and the dancing is phenomenal. 💃

I think Mr. Spilberg can do whatever he wants, although any box office. He probably is the most independent director alive

Damn!!! It’s an excellent film too. I really enjoyed it!!!!!

Pandemic says hey

Corona ruined it. Adults just don’t risk it like kids did for Spider-Man in the era of COVID-19

If they had asked me 1st, I could have tole them to save their money

This year films sucked anyways. Nothing spectacular Anyways

So, Variety editors, why are you so happy?!Your Anti-West Side Story news has not gone unnoticed since the movie was released.

Hopefully they’ll leave it out a while and it’ll have legs. It’s an amazing film.

But they spent maybe $20 on marketing…🤷🏼‍♀️.

People tell me how great it is, and i say, so was the first one! You can not improve on a classic.

Even though it's a Masterpiece

FLOP of the decade.

Purely a waste

And $1 of that $100 million went to marketing. This was barely advertised overseas.

Tony Kushner didn't understand what society was in 1957 as I don't recall this wokeism in the play...

Most likely its because of Covid. Would you not make a movie? Better times are ahead.

sorry for all the people missing it the movie is GREAT go see it you won't be sorry

It's a great movie go out and see it. I saw it three times. It's amazing on the big screen

Few people under 50 have an appetite to see a remake of a 65 year old musical, even if it is directed by Steven Spielberg.

I went three times to the local movie theatre to try to see West side story and the projection was cancelled because they received a wrong digital code from the distribution company.... Boycott?!?

iam0717_

It was also theaters only so that's not great

😯

Disastrous marketing - have you heard any of the music anywhere? Would young people even know it is a musical? He may have needed to get his head away from banning subtitles and thought about music videos.

I said it once and I’ll say it again - The trailer was absolutely awful! I love West Side Story but that trailer did not draw me in at all. They focused on the love story when they should’ve showcased the gangs with the iconic musical numbers. Plus, who was even in this movie?

How cares if it doesn't get like 400m at the box office... Money is not everything... Money isnt the only reason you can call a movie successful... Cars 3 wasnt a successful at the box office under 400m worldwide, but it made billions out of toys and merchandise

You don't expect Oscar baits to make money during a pandemic considering that it's already difficult for them to achieve that even without a pandemic.

I could’ve told you that was a mistake!

If you are 30 and under today you group up watching major School shoot outs and all other kinds of unfortunate violence in US cities & suburbs. Gang violence on screen means nothing to that generation.

No one needed a remake of this movie.

I collect WB Ls like infinity gems. Poor Matrix though. RestoreTheSnyderVerse ReleaseTheAyerCut

When movie is released simultaneously in theaters and streaming, how does theatrical box office numbers reflects actual viewership for the movie? Isn’t such numbers misleading?

Need a graphic designer DM

Best troll movie ever.

I feel it’s really hard to tell box office when most watch at home.

Spiderman had a 69%drop for the second week but many didn't talk or tweet 😕 about that 🤔

I still loved it. Die hard Matrix fan
