) - The Spanish Fort Police Department is looking to upgrade its tasers to the latest model on the market, the Taser 10 by AXON. It’s the same model the Mobile Police Department and the Mobile County Sherriff’s Office have recently switched to. Spanish Fort Police reached out to FOX10 News because of concerns it has over the public perception of the new weapons.
The way a taser functions is two probes must pierce the skin, which through contact wires closes the circuit back to the gun, activating a five-second electrical charge. This creates a Neuro Muscular Incapacitation or what’s known as NMI. In simple terms, it causes the muscles to seize up. If one of those probes misses, the remaining two-probe shot is fired. As the department began looking at upgrading, Police Chief John Barber saw a potential problem. It wasn’t with the equipment but with public perception.
Once the connection is made and the initial five-second, automatic charge is sent, the officer can send additional five-second charges through the same connection if necessary, without having to fire more probes.
