SpaceX wants to beam cheap broadband all over the planet. It will try to deliver a batch of 60 satellites into low-Earth orbit tonight, the first for a megaconstellation of satellites that the company is calling Starlink

Elon Musk's rocket company will try to deliver a batch of 60 satellites into low-Earth orbit on Wednesday, the first for a megaconstellation of satellites that SpaceX is calling Starlink. Liftoff is scheduled for 10:30 pm ET from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

— Elon Musk May 12, 2019 Right now, internet is mostly delivered via wireless cell towers or cables routed to your home or office. That leaves extremely rural or impoverished communities without affordable access. There are options for satellite-based internet, but those services are notoriously slow, expensive or unreliable.

NASA Look read it! TRUTH

So how much crap is already floating around in space?

Big Brother, on a planetary scale, here we go.

daykingbran what’s he up to?

I think i saw this in a movie and it was a real tough time for GerardButler

Just...give them some more money right?🙄

You may want to rewrite the 2nd to last paragraph, these are satellites, not stationary objects. The won’t just sit over one spot.

If it is truly cheaper, I will be the first in line to sign up.

Eh. I'd be willing to try it out. $50/month and I'm in. Better SpaceX than Comcast...

Space junk

You just know they wanted to call it Skynet

But can they block the WiFi in the White House? Asking for a nation.

limkhaixi

This sounds like a brilliant idea that can help so many people! But is this just the equivalent of filling our skies with space junk in the long run? I mean, in 20 years they may have the functional equivalent of fax machines, or rotary-dial phones.

'cheap broadband'...how long will it remain 'inexpensive'?

I like SkyNet much better

Then maybe I won't have to pay $90 a month for crap dish internet from HughesNet which I don't think has ever once gone as fast as they promised and cannot even play a youtube song without buffering.

They wonder what's killing the bees....think people think.

Do we knows speeds?

No thanks. I don’t want anything from Elon.

Sounds good until some space junk takes one out, or China figures out a way to use it to spy on people.

yes, lets go, Internet should not be a luxury for few people anymore, it's been around for so long

Can't for them to track all of my data and then use it against me for monetary or political gain!
