Teaching students the value of contributing to their community and creating positive impact epitomizes how Michael Miller lived his life.
They were married in 1994 and gave birth to their daughter Elisa Miller in 1995 at Southeast Health. In 2019, their daughter Elisa Miller gave birth to their granddaughter, Reign Miller, at Southeast Health. They have been a Southeast Health family the majority of their lives. He made an impact on numerous students as a volunteer coach at Northview High School alongside Janasky Fleming for more than a decade. Mentoring young boys and girls, Miller gave students more than just basketball skills. He supported them and pushed them to be great on the court and even better in life, helping many pursue higher education.“Michael always encouraged young men and women to pursue their dreams,” said Amy Bunting, director of the Southeast Health Foundation.
The hospital previously had a scholarship for its student volunteers and after Miller’s death, hospital officials decided to name the scholarship in his honor. It had great support from the hospital staff and Dothan community. There were donations of $30,000 raised with just the board members alone before putting it out to the public.
Recipients of this year’s scholarships included Elizabeth Beacham from Dothan High School, Sophia Huff from Wicksburg High School, Serika Patel from Alabama School of Math and Science, and Merritt Watford from Headland High School. Each student was awarded a $2,000 scholarship funded through the Southeast Health Foundation.
All banquet attendees were able to hear Miller’s story and learn about the type of man, friend, co-worker and employee he was from his loved ones in attendance. They also watched a video to learn more about him as well.
