China's efforts to win an international certification for Pao Cai, a pickled vegetable dish from Sichuan, is turning into a social media showdown between Chinese and South Korean netizens over the origin of Kimchi, a staple Korean cuisine made of cabbage.

SEOUL - China’s efforts to win an international certification for Pao Cai, a pickled vegetable dish from Sichuan, is turning into a social media showdown between Chinese and South Korean netizens over the origin of Kimchi, a staple Korean cuisine made of cabbage.

South Korean media was fast to dispute such a claim and accuse the bigger neighbour of trying to make Kimchi a type of China-made Pao Cai.“Its total nonsense, what a thief stealing our culture!” a South Korean netizen wrote on Naver.com, a widely popular web portal. Some South Korean media even described the episode as China’s “bid for world domination,” while some social media comments flagged concerns that Beijing was exercising “economic coercison.”

“Well, if you don’t meet the standard, then you’re not kimchi,” one wrote on Weibo. “Even the pronunciation of kimchi originated from Chinese, what else is there to say,” wrote another.

In retaliation, South Korea is working on a virus for the next pandemic.

Look at the flag of South Korea🥱🇰🇷☯️Taiji Bagua is a cultural symbol of Taoism in China, which has a history of thousands of years

kim chi will always be my number 1.

Wait, westerners. Paocai from Sichuan is totally different with Kimchi; and, Korean with only few hundreds years of history independent, registered many Chinese festivals to claims be originated from Korea.

Chinese used to say Ao Dai is their custom, now Kimchi is their food

Pasta by Italian and Kimchi by Korean. The immutable truth.

It's quite amazing how can Reuters -even on some utterly insignificant bit of news like this- be almost systematically deceptive, i.e. propagandist. 'They' clash over an alleged news item wording not on the ISO certification for the chinese dish.

Good diversity.

MinnieCheung 😂😂😂

I’ve got to learn how to make that stuff.

anti-Marxismlist! On my opinion, the human society is running on these: 1 technology define theoretical economic aggregate 2 labour define gross economy 3 finance system define distribution of wealth from gross economy

Winning is winning, then the loser complain

Please study Asian history first. North Korea has been a vassal of China for thousands of years. The Korean nationality is one of the 56 ethnic groups in China, yes, we keep 56 ethnic groups and their own culture, there are millions of Korean live in North-east of China.

Well, those folks are pretty adept at industrial espionage, theft of intellectual property, and straight forward copying of other peoples stuff, why would it be a stretch they would take someone’s cuisine as well?

Kimchi is a Korean dish - always was and always will be - end of. You have to understand the history of it to appreciate its importance to all Koreans.

The Chinese seem to be picking fights with every one these days over a wide range of issues.

There are more than 1.8 MILLION Korean ethnic people living in China. About 1.1 million of them live in my province Jilin. Delicious Kimchi are available everywhere. I dont care what style they are called. They are simply tasty.

Back down Beijing, This one is Seoul's hands down !🏵️

I dunno...it's too hot for me to eat, but I am very glad that the 'fight' between these two nations is about a 'winning food vote' RATHER than....never mind..it's refreshing to hear something other than 'war/sanction posturing' I guess........

Kimchi is Korean. Always has been and always will be. It has been my favorite since a child, when I saw it on M*A*S*H I was delighted.
