by Skyler ShepardThe U.S. Department of Justice said 72-year-old Osmin Morales was sentenced on April 25 after he was convicted in Miami for conspiracy to unlawfully dispense and distribute controlled substances , and six counts of unlawfully dispensing controlled substances .
Under federal law, doctors can only give out strong medications if there is a legitimate medical reason, or if it's following standard medical practices.The DOJ said Morales owned a pain management clinic where he issued prescriptions for controlled substances to most of his patients who sought them, without any actual need for them. Some of the substances that Morales prescribed were:The court found that Morales wrote many prescriptions ahead of time for controlled substances.
A Drug Enforcement Administration agent testified that Florida’s prescription drug monitoring program showed that during the time of the indictment, Morales had prescribed opioids to more than a thousand patients. The prescription also being the maximum amount of available doses.
