South Alabama won the closest of close games in its NCAA Softball Gainesville Regional opener on Friday, beating Florida Atlantic 1-0 at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.
“It’s great to get a first win under our belt,” South Alabama coach Becky Clark said. “I thought we could have played better. I thought we had some opportunities in there where we could have done a little bit more. I guess it’s always a good thing if you’re not playing. well and still win. So we’ll take that. I think tomorrow we’re gonna have to pick it up a little bit better team than what we just played, but we’ll take the win.
Lackie then struck out Becca Jones for the second out, but Kylie Hammon singled to right. Pinch-runner Holley Pettus raced for the plate, but Bockhaus fired to catcher Sasha Willems, who put the tag down for the final out. Florida has won nine straight games after Friday’s victory, including an unbeaten run through the SEC tournament. The Gators are 23-5 when playing on their home field this season.
