JOHANNESBURG—Earlier this year, doctors and epidemiologists in South Africa’s economic capital were bracing for the worst. A new coronavirus strain was surging across the country, thousands of holidaymakers were due to return from Covid-19 hot spots, and one in three coronavirus tests was coming back positive.Since mid-January, confirmed Covid-19 infections in South Africa have fallen fromto around 1,000, without a large-scale vaccination campaign or stringent lockdown.
The cause of this steep decline in cases remains somewhat of a mystery. As in other countries that have at some point experienced surprising drops in Covid-19 cases—such as India, Pakistan and—epidemiologists and virologists are piecing together different explanations for why the outbreak in South Africa isn’t following patterns set elsewhere.
Those range from important population groups reaching sufficient levels of immunity to slow down transmission, to people sticking more closely to social-distancing rules, such as wearing masks and voluntarily reducing contacts, when deaths were mounting before the decline.

We're in the middle of summer and the govt banned the sale of alcohol and imposed a 9pm curfew - effectively shutting restaurants, bars and other social gatherings. Not that much of a mystery.

JJ_Stellies The infection and death rate is much higher than official numbers indicate. Many people here are jobless and live in poverty. They don’t bother to get tested because it costs money that they don’t have. Hospitals are only in major centres and Covid beds are limited.
It’s also weird that so many people OVER 100 years of age survived BOTH the Spanish Flu and Covid19. There is a connection we won’t be able to discover for years to come.

The SA government ramped up public health measures when our nunbers were high (about 18 000 a day) in January. This included a tighter curfew and an alcohol ban. Not sure if this was the reason - but in under 3 weeks our numbers dropped to about 1 500 a day.

It is Not a mystery, I am in South Africa,most people are adhering to the rules of social distancing,mask wearing is mandatory and we sanitize/wash our hands often.most people only go out when they need to for eg work
