South Africa gets more than 80% of its electricity from coal and says it can’t afford to convert to cleaner fuels. Will rich countries help pay the bill?

EMALAHLENI, South Africa—The gleaming new chimneys and hulking generators of what will soon be the second-largest coal-fired power plant in the Southern Hemisphere are at the center of South Africa’s $20 billion, 50-year bet to fuel economic growth and lift its population out of poverty.

Now, South Africa and its Kusile Power Station have also become a test case for whether rich nations can help poorer ones transition away from the dirtiest fossil fuel.

I'm sure funds are allocated in Bidens Build Back Better Plan. Its gotta pass in order for us to look through it and see.

I’m sure us taxpayers can pay for ALL the other countries.

No lol

Nope. This is the issue. Poor countries need to devote more resources to clean energy and less to corruption.

Let South Africa switch to nuclear power.

Doubt it unless Hunter strikes a deal for the big guy…..

Hey elonmusk, phone home.

They say yes but they won’t 😂

South Africa’s emissions are of little consequence to global warming. Either China gets with the program or we can all throw out are winter clothes.

Which cost more; paying for the conversion from coal or paying for the healthcare of those that get ill from the toxins caused by using coal?

Rich countries should not step in to aid every time black countries screw up their own economies. DA has a splution: privatization. It works and it's quite frankly the only option that will assure any form of longevity. We have seen BEE we have seen bail outs and we are stuck.
