Microsoft is going to need to show that all these purchases have been worth it over the course of this generation. They’ve started quite strong, showing that their existing first party studios can create hits like Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite. Starfield will be a major test for Bethesda, but seems likely to be a hit. And who knows what exactly they have planned for the Activision Blizzard behemoth.
But while Microsoft is probably going to have a much better Xbox generation than the Xbox One era, it’s hard to see them passing Sony, barring some sort of major disaster .Xbox Game Pass is only going to keep getting bigger and more all-encompassing, something that Sony doesn’t seem like it can match.
Then there’s availability, where again, Sony feels behind the curve, given that it releases its gameson PlayStation and then maybe, if players are lucky, a few years later on PC. This is in sharp contrast to Microsoft’s up and running Xbox Cloud Gaming system, and its clear plan to continue with simultaneous PC and console releases, where one copy is free.
At a certain point, PlayStation being a solid game console with good games may get overwhelmed by the ease of play and affordability of Xbox Game Pass. I don’t think we’re at that place now, and as I say, Sony feels “safe” for this entire generation.
