Some good news for the 8th graders who don’t get into 1 of NYC’s specialized high schools

This weekend, thousands of New York City eighth graders are sitting for the SHSAT, the three-hour exam that could be their ticket to one of the city’s rigorous specialized high schools. This test, and admission to these schools in general, has been an incredibly divisive issue, with many offering criticisms and defenses of the current system. But for as long as the current system is in place, students and their parents must try to navigate it as best they can.

Moreover, even if you do live near to your specialized high school, most of your classmates won’t. This has real implications when it comes to extracurricular activities and your potential to excel at something outside of school. One of the best ways to stand out to elite colleges is to show your involvement in your community , and this is much easier when you can recruit high school friends and generally have a stronger connection to your home district.

Most of this article is unsubstantiated. And the quote below is wrong. Stuyvesant is one of the wealthiest public high schools in NYC. In fact, ALL 8 specialized high schools are in the top 92% percentile for wealth.
