Softball: O’Connor’s Leighann Goode to make herself at home at state

O’Connor senior pitcher Sammie Portillo, an Incarnate Word commitment, helped pitch the Panthers to their first state tournament since 2012.Leighann Goode’s present and future will clash at 4 p.m. Friday.

Goode, who committed to Texas in September 2020 and signed with the Longhorns in November 2021, has never played a game at McCombs Field. Although she has participated in several camps, Goode said playing a game there will have a different feel.“I’m know I’m going to be rushed with joy and a little bit of nerves,” Goode said. “But, I know I’m there for a reason. I know I’m supposed to be there, and I know I’m there for a job.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that I’m going to a future home that has the potential of going to the World Series and being in that atmosphere,” Goode said. “I’m really excited I can be part of that one day.” The Panthers claimed the District 29-6A title with a 16-0 mark and is 7-0 in the postseason. Their postseason run includes one-game playoff victories against Los Fresnos , Brennan and Round Rock .O’Connor returns six senior starters from a squad that went four rounds deep and lost to eventual state finalist Judson in three games last year.
