Anyone passionate about a particular interest or hobby likely has found an online community of seemingly like-minded individuals, and social media has made it easier than ever to make those connections. However, anyone who has found such a group can likely tell of story of infuriating experiences brought on by the bad behavior of another user or users.

Trolling existed long before the era of social media—as its origins can be traced back to the early days of the public Internet on Usenet discussion groups and multi-user dungeons. It isn't likely to go away either. The initial response might be to ignore or block those users, yet, the problems can be so great that many of us are left to abandon the community we sought out.Then at some point, we're tempted to return to those groups.

She added that before returning, users should question the motivation for rejoining a toxic group, including any feeling that is stirring them to check back in. The question remains why online forums, Facebook groups and other digital communities are so toxic at times? What brings out the uncivil behavior?
