SMU super fan Paul Layne watches warm ups as SMU hosted Cincinnati University in an AAC football game at Ford Stadium in Dallas on Saturday night, October 24, 2020.Paul Layne, an SMU alum and beloved superfan who attended 542 straight Mustangs football games, passed away on Monday after battling the subsequent difficulties from a blood clot discovered about a month ago. He was 68.
“Paul had a sudden turn late yesterday that inevitably ended in his passing today around 12:45 p.m.,” a post on aread. “He was surrounded by family and passed peacefully. We know this is going to come as a shock to many because we had such a good week last week. God has a plan for all of us and He called Paul home.
“Paul will always be an amazing man that lived graciously, humbly and had so much loving kindness for anyone he met. He almost always knew your name and greeted you with an inviting smile. “Please continue praying for the family as they prepare a service for Paul and for life without his physical presence. He will always be present in our memories.”
Our hearts are broken today with the loss of Paul Layne. He loved others, lived with an incredible passion and was without question committed to SMU. I feel honored to have known him and will will always remember him.Layne was a real estate agent, a flight attendant, and a certainty when it came to SMU football games. For 50 years he attended every game. He did so rain or shine. He did so when the Mustangs were good, and the years they weren’t.
What a life! Pony up, Paul.
