Following a torrid start to Monday’s contest, the Sixers blew a 21-point first-half lead against the 20-31 Magic and sputtered down the stretch of a 119-109 defeat to snap their seven-game winning streak.

Monday reexposed practically all of the Sixers’ biggest weaknesses — which they must limit in order to be a true East contender — as they near the Feb. 9 trade deadline and All-Star break the following week. The Sixers rank 28th out of 30 NBA teams with 16.5 fastbreak points allowed this season. They were even worse against the Magic, surrendering 28.

Until recently, poor transition defense had been the knock on an otherwise excellent unit that had ranked in the NBA’s top five in efficiency for the bulk of the season. But that has slipped in January — the Sixers have allowed 118 points per 100 possessions, which ranks 24th during that span — even as the team as a whole has ascended.

Against the Magic, though, Rivers lamented a lack of physicality that contributed to Orlando’s 35-point second quarter and 42-point third period to fuel its comeback. The Sixers have been solid at protecting the ball, ranking 12th in the league with 14 turnovers per game. Yet losing the ball too many times has been a common theme in their losses — including the 19 giveaways Monday that Orlando conveyed into 20 points.
