Ava DuVernay, studio publicist turned filmmaker, broke out with 2012’s. Her going from an indie gem to a mid-to-low budget studio programmer was unique in a world where white male filmmakers often got the keys to a franchise after a single well-liked indie flick.
Alas, while the film ended up among the eight Best Picture nominees that year, as well as snagging a nod for Common and John Legend’s original song “Glory,” the film otherwise came up empty-handed six years ago. The ensuing backlash was especially jolting upon acknowledgment that the film had been dinged for alleged historical inaccuracies concerning the role Lyndon B. Johnson played in the FBI spying on and harassing Dr. King .
