According to Pichai, the positions being eliminated “cut across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels, and regions.” He expressed his “deep regret” for the layoffs. “These are important moments to sharpen our focus, re-engineer our cost base, and direct our talent and capital to our highest priorities,” he wrote. He highlighted the business’s investments in artificial intelligence as a potential growth area.

These tech companies are such herd creatures. They haven't cut jobs because they thought it would adversely impact their stocks, but since it actually helps they are trying to out do each other in cuts. And the fact is they could cur far more as Twitter has demonstrated.
