Andrew Yang, 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, says of college athletics, 'The people who are generating the money should be sharing in it.
“It’s pretty clear the NCAA is not going to budge unless they’re actively kicked,” said Sen. Chris Murphy , a prominent critic of the NCAA’s model. In a tacit acknowledgment of some of these concerns, the NCAA announced last week the formation of a working group that will examine the issues that have been targeted by a recent congressional bill related to athletes earning money from their name, image and likeness. Rep.
Walker said he spent nearly two years talking to NCAA leaders and studying the matter. In the Senate, Murphy similarly has been meeting with principals from the college sports world. They both say the NCAA has shown no interest in adopting meaningful change on its own. Tim Nevius, a former NCAA investigator who recently launched an advocacy group for college athletes, said the NCAA won’t voluntarily overhaul its model and would have to be forced in that direction. Few entities have the power and influence to do that, he said, which makes the recent congressional interest noteworthy.
“[We] think that legislative processes are there for people to debate and discuss these things,” NCAA President Mark Emmert told reporters during the Final Four last month, “and we’ll certainly provide our views and our input into that discussion, whether it's at the federal level or the state level.”
Yes they should.
Run college athletics like a minor league? Recruit and pay athletes on college teams, but also give them a choice about being college students?
For the amount of money that is made off of them, fuck yes.
No. Get an education. They won't study if also getting paid. They won't care about learning if getting paid. Give that slot to someone that wants an education! Don't be a dumb jock
Why should the schools, coaches, and NCAA get all the money...it’s huge money. Figure out something to get the players a decent salary...they are being exploited.
They kind of are paid, right? They get a free college tuition, that's not cheap!
I think they definitely should be paid!!
Yes
YES! The few who are serious students have a demanding full time job (in some cases year round), collegiate athletics. Coaches, schools and commercial interest are all making money. Many of the kids come from needy situations and could use the money. Educ, B&R, books not enough
They get a free education. What else do they deserve?
Isn’t their job to go to college and get an education
No
not by the colleges but they can build a brand
Never mind.
Top tier programs that profit from the kids’ talent, maybe.
So....the athletic programs suck even MORE money from academics!?!! 🧐 No fucking way...
It's slave labor not to pay them.
They ARE getting paid; they get athletic scholarships.
you mean they will no longer get academic scholarships if they are getting paid?
Colleges should not pay athletes. But athletes should be able to make personal endorsements and money to capitialize on their brand. That’s straight capitalism.
No. Absolutely not.
No.
Absolutely!
