Visitors to the Short North can expect to see a beefed-up security presence in the area in the coming weeks. All of it is an effort to keep visitors safe.' provided ABC 6 with details of the plan. Starting this coming Saturday, May 4th with the first 'gallery hop' of the month, visitors can expect to see visible Columbus police bike squads along with the Short North Ambassadors, a civilian team trained in de-escalation.
This announcement comes nearly a year after a mass shooting in the Short North. Police reported that 10 people were shot at two different locations along North High Street. The incident shocked people who live, work, and shop in that area.In addition to the increased police presence, several changes have been put in place to eliminate congestion and safety issues.
Betsy Pandora, executive director of the Short North Arts District released the following statement about the safety upgrades: “We are pleased that after the immediate action we took in the wake of last summer’s safety incidents, the neighborhood has seen a significant reduction in reports of violence.
“The Short North Alliance remains committed to partnering with elected leaders, CPD, businesses, residents, and other community stakeholders to evaluate and implement necessary changes to protect our residents, visitors, and business owners who make the community so special.”
