Over 25 million tonnes of CO2 — equivalent to the total CO2 emissions of Denmark¹ — are exempt from the EU’s proposed carbon price for shipping, a new Transport & Environment shows. Arbitrary exemptions of ships such as those servicing oil and gas facilities, as well as yachts, will undermine the EU’s shipping law and let millions of tonnes of emissions off the hook, says T&E.
In July 2021 the European Commission proposed a carbon pricing scheme for shipping. It only applies to ships above a certain size and there are a number of exemptions for certain ship types. Alongside exemptions for fishing and military vessels, ships such as those servicing offshore gas and oil vessels are also excluded, despite emitting more on average than bulk carriers and oil tankers.
The EU’s shipping industry emits nearly 130 millions tonnes of CO2 each year, making up roughly 4% of the bloc’s total emissions.¹ Total CO2 emissions from the exempted vessels amounted to 25.8 Mt — comparable to the total CO2 emissions of Denmark in 2020, 26.2 Mt. . This figure does not include Denmark’s non-CO2 emissions.
³ Currently, only ships above 5000GT must report their emissions. The system suggested by T&E would require all ships above 400GT to report their emissions but only be subject to the ETS if their yearly emissions exceed 1,000 tonnes of CO2.
We need to bring down the prices of battery arrays ASAP, so India and China invest in those, rather than importing coal and gas. elonmusk
half the ships are not taxed, which account for 20% of the emissions mainly the smaller ships are left out to keep administration low in view of gigantic EU 🇪🇺 bureaucracy I am somewhat in favor of this
