Some 800 people took part in Friday’s courthouse training, he said. The sheriff’s office has trained an additional 1,500 county employees in recent weeks, he added. People typically assume their workplace is safe, and that slows their response when a deadly threat presents itself, the sheriff said. “We train people to recognize that your mind is going to play tricks on you, quite literally, and how to overcome that to buy yourself those precious few seconds … to react to the situation,” Salazar said.
