Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said he compared notes Wednesday with California Gov. Gavin Newsom about immigrants who were allegedly lured by operatives for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to board flights to Martha's Vineyard and Sacramento.
Planes carrying asylum-seekers, mostly from Colombia and Venezuela, arrived in Sacramento on June 2 and June 5, each carrying asylum-seekers. The migrants had been picked up in El Paso, taken to New Mexico and then put on charter flights to Sacramento, said California Attorney General Rob Bonta. He is investigating whether any violations of criminal or civil law occurred.
The migrants flown to Martha's Vineyard claimed they were convinced to board two charted airplanes to the vacation spot in Massachusetts by a woman known only as “Perla,” who offered them jobs, housing and education if they went to Massachusetts. The woman has since been identified as, a retired Army counterintelligence officer who lived in San Antonio and still has extensive family here.
Newsom and Bonta blamed DeSantis for the flights, and the Democratic governor has threatened kidnapping charges against DeSantis.
