Shailene Woodley: “When we met, I knew he was a football guy but I never knew what kind of a football guy he was. I never thought I’d be engaged to someone who throws balls for a living”

I like the former well enough; we seem to align politically, and I was impressed by her performance in Big Little Lies. As for the latter, I knew he was a sports man, but that was the extent of my knowledge.

Anyhow, following Woodley’s appearance last night on The Tonight Show, I am now deeply invested in their happiness. Woodley kicked off the interview confirming that Rodgers is indeed her fiancé, and they have been engaged for “a while.” It’s what she disclosed next that endeared me to the couple: Despite being engaged to marry a quarterback who has won a Super Bowl, her understanding of the sport is pretty limited. In fact, she’s never even been to a football game.

“When we met, I knew he was a football guy but I never knew what kind of a football guy he was,” she said. She added that she’s “constantly learning” about his job. “I never thought I’d be engaged to someone who throws balls for a living.” Fair enough! It seems like she knows what really matters, anyway: “He’s really so good at it.”

Sure, Rodgers may be objectively famous because of his job, but do we all have a firm, confident grasp on our partners’ work? Here’s to hoping she refuses to sully her brain with needless ball facts, keeping its pristine nature intact.
