I entered the Alamo Drafthouse in San Francisco on May 3 bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to take my first steps into a larger world as I embarked on a nine-movie “ Star Wars ” marathon alongside dozens of diehards.
Yet sitting down to watch the series consecutively for 20 hours and change, alongside a crowd of hundreds to start that winnowed over the course of the proceedings, served as more than a chance to brush up on sacred texts, Jedi or otherwise.The opening crawl doesn’t get old for “Star Wars” fans, even when it runs nine times in less than a day.

With this in mind, I quietly dreaded the screening of the sequels, the middle of which is my favorite film in the series. But fear is the path to the Dark Side, as Yoda helpfully reminded me in multiple movies during the marathon, and mine proved unfounded.
