The communal ride operates similar to a school bus, with bikers joining along a route that takes kids to school.

The city is at a crossroads over whether to make the closure permanent, and the Recreation and Park Department and San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency recently surveyed residents about whether cars should be kept off the road.

About 70% of respondents said having car-free JFK is"desirable" or"very desirable," while 28% would like JFK to return to the way it was pre-pandemic. "As for comments, those in support cited things like increased pedestrian safety, improved mental and physical well-being, and increased use of the park," Tamara Aparton, a spokesperson for Rec and Park, said."Those opposed voiced concerns about access to the park’s cultural attractions for those who live further away or with mobility issues, the effects of traffic on surrounding neighborhoods, and the loss of a commuting route.

Bornheimer is the lead organizer of Kid Safe SF and the group is advocating to keep JFK free of vehicles. "A car-free space is more acceptable and equitable for people and the space is just beloved by nearly everyone," he said."It has been used like 8 million times since it was made car-free."
