This move comes just two days after the Giants brought on Sean Manaea from the San Diego Padres a two-year deal of his own. Neither Stripling's nor Manaea's contract details have been confirmed by the team.
Both pitchers are starters in their own right, but with four of the five starter spots filled ahead of the signings, one might end up falling into more of a relief role. That could very well be Stripling, who made eight relief appearances for the Jays this past season. However, given that Anthony DeSclafani is returning from ankle surgery, it's possible Stripling will end up in a starting spot rather than as bullpen depth.
On top of that, Manaea struggled in the second half of this past season. His one playoff appearance, in which he gave up five earned runs in 1 1/3 innings in Game 4 of the NLCS against the Philadelphia Phillies, punctuated a stretch of 19 regular season games where he had a 6.07 ERA. Still, the Giants are known for revitalizing veteran pitchers who may have lost a step or two in recent years., the Giants have been rather quiet in free agency, which isn't ideal considering they still have quite a few holes to fill. The team still needs a big bat and a star shortstop.
— though one could argue the signings of Manaea and Stripling could come at least close to replicating Rodon's production.
Hot stove league was luke warm at best for SFG.
