A storm system moving across the Southern and Eastern states today is expected to bring severe thunderstorms and also could dump up to a foot of snow on parts of northern New England on Friday.

amid the coronavirus pandemic likely kept people out of danger as the storms moved through, said Division Chief John Robinson of the Mooresville Fire Department.

“We have some small restaurants downtown here and folks would be in those under normal circumstances. Luckily, because of the virus, everyone was gone. Honestly, that’s sort of a blessing,” Robinson told WXIN-TV., Jonesboro TV station KAIT reported. Officials were working to confirm whether a tornado caused the damage.Snow in New England

The heavy snow storm bearing down on Maine, and parts of northern New England, is likely to start with a mix of rain and snow Thursday afternoon, changing to snow as a push of colder air arrives,“Similar to the pattern from this past winter, Maine and portions of eastern Canada will bear the brunt of snowfall from this storm,” says AccuWeather Meteorologist Renee Duff.

"Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon, some of which have the potential to be strong to severe," the Austin/San Antonio office of the NWS warns."Large hail and damaging wind gusts are the main threats with these storms. When thunder roars, go indoors." The weather service said the threat for isolated severe storms could linger into the overnight hours across deep south Texas, as storms cross the Rio Grande from northeast Mexico.
