Republican senators have secured 50 votes to confirm a justice-to-be-named-later to a lifetime appointment. jonathanchait writes

Photo: Sarah Silbiger/Getty Images Last night, less than three days after Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s sudden death, a gleeful Lindsey Graham announced that Republican senators had the votes to replace her. “We’ve got the votes to confirm Justice Ginsburg’s replacement before the election,” he said on Fox News. “We’re going to move forward in the committee, we’re going to report the nomination out of the committee to the floor of the United States Senate so we can vote before the election.

A secondary point of outrage was that, even though 60 senators had passed it, the Senate used a 50-vote reconciliation bill to smooth out differences between the two bills. The notion that such a large social change would be implemented without minority party buy-in added to the indignation. Most comically, they have rounded up the votes without even knowing the justice’s identity. If you remember the Obamacare debate, Nancy Pelosi said, “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it — away from the fog of the controversy.” Pelosi was actually trying to say that Republican distortions had made it impossible for Americans to understand what the law actually did, and once they saw it in action, they would approve of it.

jonathanchait Good news. After all the BS with Russian collusion and the Ukraine and the Mueller Report and impeachment - Trump will be taking his revenge here. This is a bigger appointment than the presidency itself. The impact will last decades.

jonathanchait Pathetic.

jonathanchait SO REPUBLICANS AFTER ALL WILL GET AWAY WITH IT. IF DEMOCRACY IS TO SURVIVE, DEMOCRATS MUST ACT FAST AND SMART. REPUBLICANS PLAY DIRTY TRICKS, SHENANIGANS IN EVERY ELECTION AND PLAY WITH CITIZENS EMOTIONS, SUCH LIKE GOD/BIBLE, ABORTION AND FEAR.

jonathanchait This is bull

jonathanchait That makes sense... they'll do whatever he says anyway, regardless of qualifications/morals. It has nothing to do with who's right/fair for the position anymore. It's all Red vs. Blue at this point.

jonathanchait For those who were wondering why the GOP, Religious Groups etc, supported Trump here’s your answer. It was always about the SupremeCourt & abortion,

jonathanchait IN this time of a massive health crisis and economic crisis where some states failed to support resilient coequal governments and courts StateCourts should run a study of courts in all states and resilience. The Supreme Court must be fully ready for all needs by Late October.

jonathanchait not surprised.

jonathanchait then they can pass some f'ing bills.
