A bipartisan effort to get Alabamians back to work has made progress in the Senate, where lawmakers have been slow to come to an agreement on legalizing gambling.

The Senate has made progress on workforce bills, but is struggling to move forward with the gambling bill. MONTGOMERY , Ala. - legislative package. One bill provides a different pathway toward earning a high school diploma based on future career plans. Another bill renames the Department of Labor to the Department of Workforce and expands its reach. Finally, one bill establishes the Alabama Growth Alliance, a group to assist in economic development.

“All of these groups have come together to coalesce around this idea of the workforce legislation,” Reed said. “I’m excited about it.” However, gambling legislation is seeing delays. The House and the Senate still need to hash out their disagreements. The Senate does not support sport betting and casinos and needs to appoint three senators to sit on a conference committee to negotiate.This legislative session is expected to wrap up sometime in May.Not reading this story on the WSFA News App?
