A bipartisan group of senators announced an agreement had been reached — though in principle only — on new legislation meant to address the country's ongoing gun violence, including the recent Uvalde elementary school shooting.

, before that; and many more -- had increased the urgency of some kind of proposal, lawmakers involved have said.

Sens. Richard Blumenthal, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Chris Murphy, attend a rally outside the U.S. Capitol to demand the Senate take action on gun safety in the wake of the Robb Elementary School shooting in Texas, outside the Capitol in Washington, May 26, 2022.A more specific timeline remained unclear and previous such deals show it could be weeks before a draft law is ready, as was the case with the infrastructure package passed last year.

"In a less broken society, we would be able to require background checks every single time someone wants to buy a gun, and we would ban assault rifles outright. But if even one life is saved or one attempted mass shooting is prevented because of these regulations, we believe that it is worth fighting for," March for Our Lives co-founder David Hogg, who was a student at the Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting in 2018, said in a statement.Former Arizona Rep.

"It's inconceivable to me that we have not passed significant federal legislation trying to address the tragedy of gun violence in this nation," Murphy told ABC "This Week" co-anchor Jonathan Karl in late May. "The pace of everyday gun violence has dramatically escalated over the past two years."

The 18 y/o Uvalde school had no juvenile record !!! He still would’ve been able to acquire those guns and kill those children !!

It’s so disappointing.

TheView Based in previous Republican behavior, an agreement is of little value. An agreement has not been reached until it passes on the Senate floor, Then and only then h an agreement has been reached.

TheView YES. We must not let this be the ONLY effort, though, because that is exactly what republicans want... their token gun reform!! WhoopiGoldberg is correct... Just take away the military style assault rifles and high capacity magazines! AND DON'T STOP FIGHTING UNTIL WE GET THAT!

Will be writing my Members of Congress & two U.S Senators & providing them w/ evidence of what happens when a person is illegally, by mistake, placed in the hospital & 2nd amendment right is taken away from them. Done at the request of ppl stalking/harassing me. No legal relief.

Its not enough BanAssaultWeaponsNow

cPTSD is untreatable for some. Legislate Mercy&Respect Bill to go by choice please with respect and no stigma.

Could it be... something is being done...nah... bullshit...

This is a step but we need to go further and completely repeal the 2nd amendment. No one should own firearms when peoples lives are at stake!

Shall not be infringed!

What? You are bleeding from 10 places? Here's one band aide. Damn I'm a saint for helping.

GOP

The govt has ignored the red flags so they can blame guns.

Group of Latino lawmakers demand DPS provide Spanish-language information on Uvalde school shootingU.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio and four other Latino members of Congress sent a letter Friday to Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw requesting all information regarding the Uvalde school shooting be provided in Spanish as well as English. Should we provide it in French too? I mean why stop there? Let's do every language known to man. What a petty fucking request. Just read the damn thing in English… I'm reminded of my aunt.
