Senate Democrats seek another vote on border security package; House GOP vows opposition

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer appeared to set his caucus up for a Sisyphean task Monday, as he announced Senate Democrats would try once more to pass a bipartisan package on border security this week.

The border proposal aimed at gaining control of an asylum system that has been overwhelmed by historic numbers of migrants coming to the border. The bill proposes an overhaul to the system with tougher and quicker enforcement measures. If the number of illegal border crossings reaches above 5,000 daily for a five-day average, an expulsion authority would automatically kick in so that migrants are sent back to Mexico without an opportunity to make an asylum claim.

"This Joe Biden/Chuck Schumer Open Border Bill is an absolute non-starter and will further incentivize thousands of illegals to pour in across our borders daily," House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y.in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Feb. 4, the day the bill was released. "House Republicans have already passed HR2 - the, which would actually secure the border and return to the effective Trump policies with the most secure border in our nation’s history.

"For more than three years now, Congressional Democrats have stood by while the Biden Administration has opened our borders to criminal drug cartels, terrorists, and untold millions of illegal immigrants," Johnson wrote on X Monday. "Since the beginning of this Congress, the House has passed multiple pieces of bipartisan legislation to secure the border and deport criminal illegal immigrants, including the Laken Riley Act.
