Senators faced off in emotional, raw debate Wednesday on voting legislation that Democrats and civil rights leaders say is vital for protecting democracy but that’s almost certain to be defeated without a filibuster rules change

The U.S. Capitol is seen behind the frozen reflecting pool after a winter storm delivered a wintery mix, Monday, Jan. 17, 2022 in Washington.

Both Manchin and Sinema say they support the package, which has passed the House, but they are unwilling to change the Senate rules to muscle it through that chamber over Republican objections. With a 50-50 split, Democrats have a narrow Senate majority - Vice President Kamala Harris can break a tie - but they lack the 60 votes needed to overcome the GOP filibuster.

But even the proposal for a “talking filibuster” is expected to fail, since Manchin and Sinema have said they are unwilling to change the rules on a party-line vote by Democrats alone.Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois asked Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell if he would pause for a question, but the Republican leader left the chamber refusing to respond.

McConnell derided the “fake hysteria” from Democrats over the states’ new voting laws and called the pending bill a sprawling federal takeover of election systems. He said doing away with filibuster rules would “break the Senate.”

‘Certain to be defeated’ is a poor use of passive phrasing. It is certain to be filibustered by Republicans who don’t support voting rights.

Senate to debate voting rights ahead of filibuster showdownFor the first time this Congress, the Senate is expected to debate voting rights legislation on Tuesday ahead of a showdown on the filibuster rule this week. There is nothing wrong with our Voting System, DON'T mess with it Hostile authoritarian plutocratic takeover. The platitudes came up hollow. USA Otherwise known as standing in front of everyone and giving a speech while no one listens. “Debate” seems like a ridiculous term for what congress does.

Big voting bill faces defeat as 2 Dems won’t stop filibusterWASHINGTON (AP) — Voting legislation that Democrats and civil rights leaders say is vital for protecting democracy appeared headed for defeat as the Senate churned into debate Tuesday, a deva… Funny we just had a presidential election with the most votes in history! 🤔 Doesn't seem to be a problem with anybody getting out to vote. It is not okay but make them put it on the record with the other R accomplices Maybe Dems need to do their job and convince people if they do not have enough votes to end the filibuster instead of complaining about it. Also, if they are not doing in person they should -- that is what made it so interesting years ago. They need to do their job.

Raw Senate debate in fight to end voting bill filibusterDespite his late push, Biden has been unable to persuade two holdout Democrats, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, to change Senate rules so the party can overpower a Republican filibuster that is blocking the voting bill. It’s the same old crap from the Left/Democrats: always changing the rules and opening loopholes when they know can’t “win” otherwise. Biggest example: 2020 elections. One election cycle they’re for this, then the next they’re against it.
