The final sorting of who will be on the ballot in November’s elections begins Monday, when early voting commences for the runoffs in the March 1 Democratic and Republican primaries. Here are the Houston Chronicle Editorial Board's recommendations.

Republicans looking for a strong candidate to challenge U.S. Rep. Lizzie Fletcher, the Houston Democrat seeking her third term, have two good choices who offer voters reliably conservative approaches to the nation’s challenges. We believe Tim Stroud, a former combat medic for the U.S. Army, stands out due to the level of thinking he has put into solving them. A strong supporter of oil and gas, Stroud, 50, also wants to see continued investments in renewable fuels.

Dawn Buckingham, 54, over Tim Westley, 50, the official historian for the Texas GOP. Buckingham has spent six years in the Texas Senate, and will be equipped to chart the political and policy crosscurrents that are such a part of being land commissioner.Sarah Stogner made waves in an otherwise sleepy GOP primary for railroad commissioner when she posted a video on TikTok of her straddling a pumpjack semi-nude to promote her campaign.
