. An overall rating of at least three stars means a district meets state standards.
Districts receive points for five components based on their level of performance. Each component is weighted and then summed to determine the overall rating. When a component cannot be rated, such as an elementary school that does not have a graduation component, the remaining components contribute proportionally to the overall rating.
The components achievement and progress are weighted at 28.601%, while graduation rate, gap closing and early literacy are rated at 14.266%.The star rating replaced the previous letter grades on the report cards, a change that resulted from a law passed by the Ohio General Assembly. Districts are now measured by one to five stars, with one star representing the lowest performance and five the highest.
The Ohio Department of Education notes that “report cards are only one part of Ohio’s education story. To get a more complete picture, it is essential to visit schools, talk to educators, parents and students, and review school or district websites.”Legend: Overall, Achievement, Progress, Gap Closing, Graduation and Early Literacy. Additional details about each of these categories are shown below the chart.
