Booming electric vehicle sales have spurred a growing demand for lithium. But the light metal, which is essential for making power-packed rechargeable batteries, isn't abundant. Now, researchers report a major step toward tapping a virtually limitless lithium supply: pulling it straight out of seawater.

Lithium's scarcity has raised concerns that future shortages could cause battery prices to skyrocket and stymie the growth of electric vehicles and other lithium-dependent technologies such as Tesla Powerwalls, stationary batteries often used to store rooftop solar power. To get around this problem, researchers led by Yi Cui, a materials scientist at Stanford University, looked for ways to make electrode materials more selective. First, they coated an electrode with a thin layer of titanium dioxide as a barrier. Because lithium ions are smaller than sodium, it is easier for them to wriggle through and into the electrode sandwich.

It wont be cheap ,, if it were thats where they'd be getting now

Mining lithium is not a green activity and what do you do with all the old lithium batteries when all these electric cars batteries Go dead we're gonna have massive landfills of unrecyclable batteries nobody thought this through . electric cars should be powered by solar power.

_hamster_coin Hamstercoin (Metaverse web3 nft) I have a Dream. Tesla's power, carbon-free clean world with hamster's effort

It *is* abundant.

Today's ‘gold panning’

Fascinating really

Invest in Ukraine 🛸 elonmusk 🤗 ZelenskyyUa

Use 'sun domes' for the desalination of sea water into useable fresh water, use the concentrated brine by-product to extract lithium, very simple but more viable in hotter climates so useless for western business and therefore not a concern.

Oh yeah elonmusk desalination!

So BULLISH ON TESLA boringcompany TeslaSolar etc tomorrow! elonmusk also reminded at ONS that there is NOSHORTAGE of lithium. This has been on my radar. I have other ideas too!

👍😍👍

and gold too, I think it was a german who tried to get all the gold from the oceans to solve the inflation in germany in the 20's, it did not end well.

A lot of things we can extract from geothermal brine. Geothermal power to run the extraction plant, Lithium, pure water, and small amount of gold too.

Your mom’s a ‘virtually limitless lithium supply’ !!!

the fact that you don't know that Lithium is a Salt and NOT a metal leads me to question anything you say. also lithium is wildly abundant on the planet earth.

this is so cool!!

Has the need for lithium compounds been tested for marine life? 🤔❓

elonmusk Imagine filtering sea water for drinking water and producing lithium as byproduct just like how boring company is using the dirt from digging a hole to produce brick.

Any risks removing a lot of salt?

Alberta and Saskatchewan have lithium 😊🎶

So now many new energy vehicle companies sell a car, at the same time accompanied by losses, profits are in the pocket of mining enterprises.elonmusk

Is it cost effective?

Never challenge the federal reserve not the technological capacity of the human species.

Elon Musk liking an article that reports on the progress in extracting lithium from the sea. The lithium cartel can be considered screwed.

Still looks like a science project, and not something battery makers (or analysts) should rely on to pan out anytime soon in their lithium production projections.
