Search for survivors underway after plane crashes near San Clemente Island

A search is underway off the coast of San Diego after a jet carrying three people crashed near San Clemente Island, a Coast Guard spokesperson said.

The Coast Guard was notified shortly after 7:50 a.m. by the air traffic control tower on San Clemente Island that a plane may have crashed about one mile southwest of the island, which is about 80 miles off the coast of San Diego, said Coast Guard spokesperson Levi Read. A debris field was subsequently located by Customs and Border Protection personnel who responded to the emergency call.The Coast Guard launched a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from San Diego to respond to the site. Navy units in the area also responded, Read said.

Read said the aircraft is a Phoenix Air Learjet owned by Fireside Partners in Delaware and reportedly was carrying three people on board, all civilians. Personnel on San Clemente Island reported the aircraft “didn’t make it back to the runway” after reporting an emergency aboard the plane, a Coast Guard statement said.

“We have found a debris field. There’s an ongoing search with Coast Guard, U.S. Navy and Customs and Border Protection,” Read said.A U.S. Coast Guard Air Station San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew has launched for search and rescue efforts for the report of a downed aircraft with 3 persons on board 1 mile SW of San Clemente Island.
