FAIRBANKS, Alaska - PAWS Search and Rescue dogs rely on several main techniques to locate missing persons located within interior Alaska. One of these techniques is known as air scent ing.
If possible, the search and rescue dog will be given a specific scent article: the person’s used clothing, pillowcase, or even a piece of gauze that has been wiped over the person’s car seat and steering wheel. If no scent article is available, the dog will simply be prompted to find all the people in the search area.
Each search and rescue dog has a different signal to show the handler when they have picked up the trail. One dog might lay down and bark, while another might jump on the handler. Garmin is trained to circle around Chris’s feet. “So the game we play lets them know that, this scent is what we’re looking for, and when you find it you win the game,” Tordoff said. “And when the dog finds somebody at the end of the trail, we train them to identify which person they were looking for, come back to the handler, and take them back to that person even though it might only be 15 feet away.”
