The field of cancer immunotherapy is becoming increasingly crowded. In the more than 20 years since the first effective CAR T-cell therapy, dozens of companies including BioNTech and Allogene Therapeutics have been putting their own spin on the treatment, which traditionally involves extracting T immune cells from a cancer patient, modifying the receptors on those cells to bind to cancer tumors and infusing them back into the patient.
